与同种物质的液态处于动态平衡的蒸气。液体蒸发时，液体内部平均动能较大的分子不断逸出液面成为蒸气，但同时蒸气中也有分子回到液体内。当在同一时间内，逸出液面的分子数和回入液体的分子数相等时，液面上方的蒸气密度不再增大，此时的蒸气即为饱和蒸气。固体升华时，与同种物质的固态处于动态平衡的蒸气，也称饱和蒸气。
