原意是要求人尽善尽美，后指批评、指责过失。

1. 以尽善尽美要求人。

   《淮南子·氾论训》：“是故君子不责备於一人。”《新唐书·太宗纪赞》：“然《春秋》之法，常责备於贤者。” 清 姚鼐 《柬王禹卿病中》诗：“依违见事信为迟，责备时贤毋乃重。”

2. 批评；指摘。

   《明史·周宗建传》：“时 辽 事方棘，上疏责备辅臣。”《三侠五义》第四回：“老爷闻听心中暗想：‘既是儒流读圣贤之书，焉有攻乎异端之理，待我出去责备他一番。’” 夏丏尊 叶圣陶 《文心》四：“我刚才说你们表达感情不充分，这是深一层的责备。”
