多年生草本植物，叶子条状披针形，花橙红色或黄红色。供观赏，花蕾可以吃，根可入药。

1. 植物名。俗称金针菜、黄花菜、多年生宿根草本，其根肥大。叶丛生，狭长，背面有棱脊。花漏斗状，橘黄色或桔红色，无香气，可作蔬菜，或供观赏。根可入药。古人以为种植此草，可以使人忘忧，因称忘忧草。

   汉 蔡琰 《胡笳十八拍》：“对萱草兮忧不忘，弹鸣琴兮情何伤。” 唐 万楚 《五日观妓》诗：“眉黛夺将萱草色，红裙妒杀石榴花。” 明 张时彻 《采葛篇》：“愿留枯根株，化作萱草枝。”

2. 借指母亲。
