1. 谓前部为方形。

   《礼记·玉藻》：“天子直，公侯前后方。大夫前方，后挫角。” 郑玄 注：“圜其上角变於君也。韠以下为前，以上为后。”

2. 前面。

   丁玲 《奔》：“﹝他们﹞只凝着痴呆困乏的灰色眼珠，茫然的望着前方。” 萧殷 《美国点滴·差距》：“宴会厅座落在这奇景的正前方。”

3. 接近战线的地区。与“后方”相对。

   邹韬奋 《抗战以来》二二：“不但大后方的千万青年，对于求知也有着这样无比的热情，就是在前方作战的斗士，对于求知也有着同样无比的热情。” 郭沫若 《洪波曲》第十章一：“我们所到的还不能算是真正的前方。”
