一年生缠绕草本植物。叶互生，近心脏形，通常三裂。秋季开花，花冠漏斗状，蓝色、淡紫色或白色。可供观赏。

1. 即河鼓。星座名。俗称牛郎星。亦指 牛郎织女 神话传说故事中的人物。

2. 即牛宿。星宿名。

   《晋书·天文志上》：“牵牛六星，天之关梁，主牺牲事。”参见“ 牛宿 ”。

3. 指牵牛花。

   宋 陆游 《夜雨》诗：“籓篱处处蔓牵牛，薏苡丛深稗穗抽。” 宋 孙奕 《履斋示儿编·杂记二·因物得名》：“世有所出所嗜所作因冠名者多矣……人牵牛来易药，而名其药曰牵牛。” 明 李时珍 《本草纲目·草七·牵牛子》﹝集解﹞引 陶弘景 曰：“牵牛作藤生花，状如扁豆，黄色。”
