1. 创始之人。

   《礼记·乐记》：“作者之谓圣，述者之谓明。”

2. 称在艺业上有卓越成就的人。

   五代 贯休 《读刘得仁贾岛集》诗之一：“二公俱作者，其奈亦迂儒。”

3. 指从事文章撰述或艺术创作的人。

   三国 魏 吴质 《答东阿王书》：“还治讽采所著，观省英瑋，实赋颂之宗，作者之师也。” 唐 杜甫 《李潮八分小篆歌》：“ 秦 有 李斯 汉 蔡邕 ，中间作者絶不闻。” 清 朱彝尊 《摸鱼子》词：“《乐章》《琴趣》三千调，作者古今能几？” 孙犁 《澹定集·大星陨落》：“作者狭隘，其作嚣嚣。”

4. 《论语·宪问》：“子曰：‘贤者辟世，其次辟地，其次辟色，其次辟言。’子曰：‘作者七人矣。’” 邢昺 疏：“此章言自古隐逸贤者之行也……作，为也，言为此行者，凡有七人。”后以称隐逸之士。

   《后汉书·逸民传序》：“ 汉室 中微， 王莽 篡位，士之藴藉义愤深矣。是时裂冠毁冕，相携持而去之者，盖不可胜数。 杨雄 曰：‘鸿飞冥冥，弋者何篡焉。’言其违患之远也……盖録其絶尘不反，同夫作者，列之此篇。”《后汉书·黄琼传》：“伏见处士 巴郡 黄错 、 汉阳 任棠 ，年皆耆耋，有作者七人之至。宜更见引致，助崇大化。” 李贤 注引《论语》：“作者七人。”

5. 指工匠、役夫。

   《韩非子·解老》：“作者数摇徙则亡其功。”《史记·平準书》：“当是时， 汉 通 西南夷 道，作者数万人。”《隋书·杨素传》：“寻令 素 监 仁寿宫 ， 素 遂夷山堙谷，督役严急，作者多死。”
