勇于维护正义的人；侠义的人。

1. 恪守大义、笃行不苟的人。

   《左传·桓公二年》：“ 武王 克 商 ，迁九鼎于 雒邑 ，义士犹或非之。” 汉 刘向 《列女传·楚接舆妻》：“义士非礼不动，不为贫而易操，不为贱而改行。” 宋 苏轼 《大臣论上》：“天下不幸而无明君，使小人执其权。当此之时，天下之忠臣义士莫不欲奋臂而击之。”

2. 指侠义之士。

   《战国策·赵策一》：“ 赵襄子 曰：‘彼义士也，吾谨避之耳。’” 唐 司空图 《冯燕歌》：“ 魏 中义士有 冯燕 ，游侠 幽 并 最少年。”

3. 旧指出钱赞助刻碑的人。

   北魏 郦道元 《水经注·阴沟水》：“城东南有一碑，碑文悉破无验，惟碑背故吏姓名尚存： 熹平 元年，义士门生 沛国 萧刘定兴 立。” 清 翟灏 《通俗编·释道》：“ 汉 《曹全碑》阴：义士某千，义士某五百。义士盖但出财之人。今人出财布施皆曰信士。 宋太宗 朝避御名，凡义字皆改为信。今之信士，即 汉 碑所称义士也。”

4. 旧时官吏把其离任后来到其原辖地的士民，称为“义士”。亦称“ 义民 ”。
