在风力作用下由沙粒堆积成的小丘。高度一般从数米到数十米，有丘状、垄状、新月状。在沙漠中最常见。裸露沙丘易于随风缓慢移动，生长植物后流动性减弱，利用这个特点可以对它进行改造。

1. 在风力作用下由沙粒聚成的沙堆。多呈丘状或垄岗状。常见于沙漠地区及河岸、海滨的沙滩上。

2. 古地名。在今 河北省 广宗县 西北 大平台 。相传 殷纣 在此广筑苑台，作酒池肉林，淫乐通宵； 战国 赵武灵王 被围，饿死于 沙丘宫 ； 秦始皇 巡视途中病逝于 沙丘 平台 。见《史记·殷本纪》、《赵世家》、《秦始皇本纪》。
