某些物质受到光线、电子等的照射时会发光，照射停止后发光仍能维持一定时间，叫做余辉。余辉的久暂决定于发光物质的成分，通常把余辉在10-8秒以下的称荧光（与温度无关），余辉在10-8秒以上的称磷光（通常随温度升高而减少）。能发荧光的物质叫荧光物质。日光灯管壁上、电视机荧光屏上都涂有荧光物质。
