以土、水为基本生产资料，以太阳能为基本能源，以植物、动物和微生物等生物为生产对象，通过劳动，生产所需物质的生产事业。狭义上仅指种植业，且主要指粮食生产。广义上包括农业（种植业）、林业（造林营林）、牧业（养殖业）、渔业（水产养殖）、副业（农民附带从事的加工业）等。
