明清两代由朝廷派到各省主持乡试的官员。后泛指主持考试的人。

1. 主持考试。

   明 陆深 《科场条贯》：“ 永乐 十五年，两京始命翰林春坊官主考。”《明史·选举志二》：“ 成化 十五年，御史 许进 请各省俱视两京例，特命翰林主考。”

2. 指主考官。

   《明史·选举志二》：“主考，乡、会试俱二人。”《官场现形记》第二回：“翰林院里的人都是清贵之品，将来放了外任，不是主考，就是学政。”

3. 泛指主持考试的人。
