2. 首尾经过；底细。

   《梁书·徐勉传》：“既立墅舍，以乖旧业，陈其始末，无愧怀抱。”《新唐书·武平一传》：“ 日用 谢曰：‘吾不知，君能知乎？’ 平一 条举始末，无留语。”《红楼梦》第一二○回：“ 贾政 昨晚也知 巧姐 的始末。” 老舍 《四世同堂》五七：“ 李四爷 见到 祈老人 ，像见了亲弟兄，把前前后后，始末根由，一口气都说了出来。”

3. 犹生平。

   宋 叶适 《参议朝奉大夫宋公墓志铭》：“ 枏 録公始末如此，题曰‘歷官次序’，来求铭，而其行事闕焉。”《四库全书总目·杂家五·石林燕语十卷考异一卷》“故 汪应辰 尝作《石林燕语辨》而 成都 宇文绍奕 亦作考异以纠之”原注：“案： 绍奕 始末无考。 嘉定 中有枢密使 宇文绍节 ，疑其昆弟。”
