1.旧时从黄昏到拂晓一夜间分为五更，即一更、二更、三更、四更、五更。

2.指第五更：起～，睡半夜。

1. 古代乡官名。用以安置年老致仕的官员。

   《魏书·尉元传》：“卿以七十之龄，可充五更之选。”详“ 三老五更 ”。

2. 旧时自黄昏至拂晓一夜间，分为甲、乙、丙、丁、戊五段，谓之“五更”。又称五鼓、五夜。

   北齐 颜之推 《颜氏家训·书证》：“或问：‘一夜何故五更？更何所训？’答曰：‘ 汉 魏 以来，谓为甲夜、乙夜、丙夜、丁夜、戊夜；又云鼓，一鼓、二鼓、三鼓、四鼓、五鼓；亦云一更、二更、三更、四更、五更；皆以五为节……更，歷也，经也，故曰五更尔。’”

3. 特指第五更的时候。即天将明时。

   南朝 陈 伏知道 《从军五更转》诗之五：“五更催送筹，晓色映山头。” 清 昭槤 《啸亭续录·皇上日阅实录》：“五更时，上已遣小内侍索取，余是日承值，乃匆匆启库取书。” 陈登科 《风雷》第一部第一章：“俺在外边，风里雨里，起五更睡半夜。”
