原指西洋贵族府邸中演唱、演奏的世俗音乐。因在室内演出(而非在教堂、剧院、音乐厅)，故名。17世纪初始于意大利，有室内奏鸣曲、室内康塔塔等。现今，主要指各种重奏曲(如弦乐四重奏、钢琴五重奏等)。有时也指管弦或钢琴等乐器的独奏曲，以及用一件或数件乐器伴奏的独唱曲、重唱曲等。
