节肢动物，全身有甲壳，眼有柄，足有五对，前面一对长成钳状，叫螯，横着爬。种类很多，通常生活在淡水里的叫河蟹，生活在海里的叫海蟹。

1. 亦作“ 螃蠏 ”。蟹的俗称。

   明 徐元 《八义记·孤儿耀武》：“时值香橙螃蟹月，景当新酒菊花天。” 清 翟灏 《通俗编·禽鱼》：“《周礼·梓人》疏：蟹谓之螃蟹，以其侧行者也。按：语义当正作旁，今字从虫，疑是后人率加。《埤雅》云：蟹旁行，故里语谓之旁蟹，可证。” 刘白羽 《黑》一：“几棵细挺的胡桃树，掩护着一段石头台阶，石块，不那么整齐，歪歪斜斜，如同一串从篓子里爬出来的螃蟹。”
