宋元时期民间说书的一种。讲说历代兴废和战争故事，据史传加以铺叙引申。也称讲史”。记录时多用浅近文言。今所见最早的平话是宋代佚名《五代史平话》。明清以后亦称评话”，江浙一带则专用来称呼说大书”的，内容多讲历史故事或小说故事。
