1. 防守，抵御。

2. 关禁。指防守抵御的设施。

3. 防备，戒备。

   清 李渔 《玉搔头·分任》：“此人必有异谋，不可不加防御。” 丁玲 《阿毛姑娘》第一章三：“开始是囝囝的笑，抹去她所有对人的防御的心。”

4. 本为官名。防御使的简称。后渐成为对士绅的尊称，与员外、朝奉相似。

   宋 洪迈 《夷坚甲志·徐防御》：“适 显仁太后 患目疾，访草泽医，遂获展效，补官与宅，锡賚不胜计，称为 徐防御 。”《古今小说·新桥市韩五卖春情》：“那市上有个富户 吴防御 ，妈妈 潘氏 ，止生一子，名唤 吴山 。”

5. 清 代驻防旗兵低级军官之名，设于佐领之下。
