含大量黏土矿物、层理不明显的一种沉积岩。常呈块状。由软泥经压实作用、脱水作用及轻微的矿物转化而成。除黏土矿物外，还混有石英、长石等碎屑物质和铁、锰等自生矿物。按混入物状况，可分为铁质泥岩、硅质泥岩、钙质泥岩、粉砂质泥岩和黑色泥岩等。
