也叫释教。世界三 大宗教之一。相传公元前6—前5世纪时由释迦牟尼所创立。宣扬因果报应，轮回转世，虽主张“众生平 等，皆可成佛”，但又说“有生皆苦”，而把解脱痛苦的希望寄托于消极的“涅槃”（意为寂灭）境界。流传于亚洲许多国家。东汉初，佛教传入中国，在这以后，在同儒、道两家思想长期接触、交融的过程 中，形成许多宗派，对中国社会有很大的影响。

1. 世界主要宗教之一。公元前六至五世纪古 印度 的 迦毗罗卫国 (今 尼泊尔 境内)王子 释迦牟尼 创立。反对婆罗门教的种姓制度，主张“众生平等”、“有生皆苦”，以涅槃(超脱生死)为理想境界。相传 东汉 明帝 时传入我国。或说 西汉 哀帝 元寿 元年(公元前二年)时即已传入。见《三国志·魏志·乌凡鲜卑东夷传》 裴松之 注引《魏略·西戎传》。至 魏 、 晋 、 南北朝 时得到发展， 隋 、 唐 时达到鼎盛，形成天台宗、律宗、净土宗、法相宗、华严宗、禅宗、密宗以及三阶教等 中国 佛教宗派，对我国的文学、艺术、哲学以至社会的风俗习惯等，都有较大影响。

   南朝 梁 沉约 《枳园寺刹下石记》：“佛教东流，适末尤著，始自 洛京 ，盛於 江 左。” 清 沉大成 《学福斋杂著·读通典职官》：“ 开元 二十年七月敕：末摩尼法本是邪见，妄称佛教，誑惑黎元，宜严加禁断。” 吕澂 《中国佛学源流略讲》序论：“佛教传入 中国 后和 中国 原有的思想相接触，不断变化，不断发展，最后形成了自己的特殊的新学说。”
