在各种地质作用下形成的、由一种或多种矿物组合而成的集合体。是构成地壳的主要物质。按成因分为岩浆岩、沉积岩和变质岩三大类。

1. 高大的石块；大石块。

   《史记·高祖本纪》：“ 高祖 即自疑，亡匿，隐於 芒 碭 山泽巖石之间。” 南朝 梁 江淹 《诣建平王上书》：“其上则隐於篇肆之间，卧於巖石之下。” 清 陈康祺 《郎潜纪闻》卷三：“﹝ 苏州 沧浪亭 ﹞巖石玲瓏，水木清美，遂为城中名胜之冠。” 杨沫 《青春之歌》第一部第三章：“第二天大早，她就被海浪拍打着岩石的声音催醒了。”

2. 比喻重臣。语出《诗·小雅·节南山》：“节彼南山，维石巖巖。赫赫 师尹 ，民具尔瞻。” 宋 曾巩 《与北京韩侍中启》：“自避远於烦机，久淹回於外服，宜从严石之望，趣正袞衣之归。” 宋 苏舜钦 《闻京尹范希文等谪官》诗：“大议摇巖石，危言犯采旒。苍黄出京府，憔悴謫南州。”

3. 指构成地壳的矿物的集合体。分火成岩、水成岩和变质岩三大类。
